Q11070 - FAQ: Just received a 150 gal tank, custom stand, cover and all lights. Need to know everything else I need to get things up and running for a fresh water set-up. Would like to keep it simple to start with.

Hello and thank you for your inquiry.

Without knowing exactly what type of fish you are planning on keeping it is hard to give exact items, but I can go over the basic items needed to get your tank up and running.

In addition to the tank, stand and hood/light you will also need a filtration system, heating system and thermometer.  For a filtration system I would recommend using a couple of canister filters such as a couple of the Aquarium Pharm. Rena Filstar XP4 filters.  You can also look at the Eheim line of canister filters.  They have a wide variety of styles to choose from.

For your heaters I would recommend 3-5 watts per gallon of water, so around 450-750 watts of heating.  Since this is quite a large tank I would suggest using 2-4 heaters spaced across the tank to help evenly distribute the heat.  There are many different thermometers to choose from as well.

From here you will need to add gravel and any decorations that you wish to use (such as rocks, plants, driftwood, etc...).

In addition I would suggest using a water conditioner to remove any harmful chemicals (like chlorine) from your tapwater.

If there is anything else we can do for you please let us know.
