Hello and thank you for your inquiry.
Most people will keep their daylights on for around 8-10 hours per day. If you are also running actinic lights and they have their own power supply you can set up the tank to have a "dawn to dusk" effect. You do this by having your actinic lights come on about 1 hour prior to your daylights and then shutting down 1 hour after your daylights go off. So you could have your actinic lights come on at 10 am, your daylights come on at 11 am then your daylights go off at 7 pm (that would give 8 hours of daylight) and the actinics go off at 8 pm.
You will want to set up the lights so they are on while you are home for viewing the tank. If you don't get home from work until 5 or 6 at night, I would suggest having the lights start to come on around 1 or 2 so you can enjoy the tank at night when you are home.
If there is anything else we can do for you please let us know.
