Q11228 - FAQ: What causes green algae on live rock and brown algae on live sand ?

Hello and thank you for your inquiry.

Algae is going to be caused by light and the available nutrients in the tank (phosphates and nitrates in particular).  Tanks will also go through cycles where certain algae will grow faster than other times.  I have linked a couple of articles below that will hopefull help some:
